Only the Mexican government can determine what is or is not a magical city in Mexico. The criteria include natural beauty, historical preservation and other factors.
Mexico now has 45 towns added to the list.
The magical towns have a certain allure and mystery. The government of Mexico has made it easier to reach them and to boost tourism. As part of the criteria for being designated as a magical city, it must be within 124 miles from a major tourist attraction such as Cancun, or ancient ruins.
After the addition of 45 new areas, the number of magical town in Mexico has now reached 177. Cozumel is one of the four towns that are now included in the list.
New additions include the town of Guerrero’s Zihuatanejo near Ixtapa’s touristy area.
